For this personal project, I wanted to create an ode to French desserts through a visual style inspired by Sofia Coppola's film Marie Antionette.
As a young girl, I was always fascinated by the numerous cookbooks that filled my mother’s kitchen. They came in a variety of shapes and sizes with pastel colour palettes and different types of binding styles. But they all shared one thing in common: the vivid imagery that accompanied the recipes I knew I would never attempt, but loved for how beautiful they looked. This cookbook is designed with those vintage cookbooks in mind.
In creating Let Them Eat Cake, I wanted to reinterpret that vintage aesthetic through the lens of the film, Marie Antoinette. A visual piece as a tribute to Sofia Coppola's modern take on French decadence. Using collage-styled layouts, I combined elements like floral patterns, pastel palettes, and bold, juxtaposed type to convey both opulence and playfulness.
Let Them Eat Cake shows French desserts as both culinary creations and works of art, combining the charm of vintage cookbooks with a contemporary touch.
